Written by Philip Young and Judith Baren

Introduction
Upper Hopton lies close to but distant from the urban area of West Kirklees at a height of over
500 feet above sea level in an exposed position. The village has a long history and a number
of historical buildings and gardens with a tightly knit community which is working together.

SECTION A – Horticultural Achievement
Areas of Achievement:
The improvement of the area around the old chip shop and the planting of the rose garden in
front of Croft House, also the well maintained St. John’s Churchyard.

Areas for Improvement:
The hanging baskets and planting in front of Croft House could have a more hardy planting for
spring and maybe the cricket club could be encouraged to do a little more towards the in bloom
initiative.

SECTION B – Environmental Responsibility
Areas of Achievement:
The area for mulch storage and recycling also the wildlife garden to the rear of Croft House
together with the management of vacant premises and sites.

Areas for Improvement:
The number of places where water recycling is taking place could be increased as could the
number of composting areas.

SECTION C – Community Participation
Areas of Achievement:
The cohesion of the local community and how they work together for the good of the local in
bloom initiative and the general improvement of Upper Hopton.

Areas for Improvement:
Greater involvement of young people and more local publicity material.
